Report of 50th Ashita no Joe Exhibition in Tokyo

2018-08-13

I went to the exhibition of Tomorrow’s Joe 50th anniversary on the first day.

It was held in the Tokyo Sky Tree.

The original pictures were displayed.

They were selected by a son of Kajiwara Ikki and Chiba Tetsuya.

Kajiwara Ikki is the author of this story, but already died.

Son of Kajiwara selected

  • The encounter of Joe and Yoko in the court
  • The first cross counter against Rikiishi
  • vs. Aoyama match in the juvenile training school
  • Crying Joe on the night of returning to Sanya from the juvenile training school
  • Rikiishi shouts “Stand up Joe!" at the match against Wolf
  • Yoko comes to the Joe erasure meeting
  • The sparing of Joe and Carlos in Shiraki gym
  • The sparing of Joe and Carlos in Tange gym
  • Joe and Noriko by the river
  • Desperate struggle of the Orient title match
  • Joe pours water on Yoko
  • Jose with his family in Hawaii
  • A pair of gloves from Joe to Yoko
  • The last page

Commentaries by the son of Kajiwara were attached to each picture.

He says very interesting things.

His father said

“Yoko has begun to love Joe when she was awfully insulted by Joe in the juvenile training school. But she did not notice one’s feeling.

And she wanted to see his ruin at the same time.

So, she became a promoter and found strong boxers for beating Joe."

“Finally, she required renunciation of Joe in the Oriental title match.

Her hatred surrendered to love at that time."

……

Love and hate.

50 years ago, comics were products for children even in Japan.

But Kajiwara Ikki tried to write such a complicated mind of love.

What a difficult challenge he did!

And he trusted his readers so much.

Does his soul reach you?

  • Party of getting the professional qualification in front of Tange gym

When Joe vomited at a ring, Chiba had trouble of the duodenum.

The process when Joe recovered himself from the death of Rikiishi was also Chiba’s recovery process.

This work was the serialization of the weeklies.

He is the artist who draws the straight line freehand without using the ruler.

I think that it was hard to draw such careful works every week.

MEGALOBOX

The corner of MEGALOBOX was also set in Ashita no Joe Exhibition.

Are you following MEGALOBOX?

It’s a new animation starting in this spring.

It’s the new story that inherited a spirit of Ashita no Joe.

Because photography is O.K. in this corner, I show you some pictures.

This is Rikiishi painted by You Moriyama, director of MEGALOBOX.

MEGALOBOX was planed as the 50th anniversary of Joe.

There was the plan to make an extra of Toru Rikiishi, at first.

Then Moriyama created some image pictures.

These are parts of them.

It was a poster with the height like person.

This painting is very popular in Japan.

All people took this picture as soon as they knew it was allowed.
