How old was Danpei Tange?

Like the other characters, it wasn’t revealed in “Ashita no Joe" neither the original comic nor TV anime series, but parts of his past were told to us. (It’s rare in “Ashita no Joe.")

  • Danpei retired from boxing because of the loss of his eye.
  • He opened his gym but failed to operate it.
  • He crossed “Namida-Bashi-bridge"  hopelessly.
  • He sold his blood for money and drank every day until he found Joe Yabuki.

Other details were unclear, including his age.

How old was Danpei when Joe appeared in front of him?

Danpei said, “I’ve earned 30 years in the boxing world"

In the original comics, Joe fought against Carlos Libera in the exhibition match.
(This episode is only in the original comics. There are two matches against Carlos in the original comics. They are an exhibition match and an official match.)

Joe lost his qualification by Danpei’s mistake.

When Joe dropped from the ring and tried to crawl up, Danpei carelessly pushed him from under the ring.

As the second touched the boxer, Joe lost.

The referee count 9, Danpei pushed Joe.↓

Danpei apologized to Joe,

“I’m sorry, Joe.

Though I’ve earned 30 years in the boxing world, I made such a childish mistake."

He related to boxing for 30 years.

That means he became a prizefighter 30 years ago.

At what age did Danpei make his debut?

Unknown.

I think with common sense, it is probably between 15 and 25 years old.

“30 years" means “ABOUT 30 years"

If he said “31 years", it meant just 31 years.

However, he said “30 years."

In this expression, there is a range, about 28 years to 32years.

The estimated age of Danpei from this source

At the exhibition match between Carlos vs. Joe,

The lower limit:
debut 15-years-old + 28 years passed: 43-year-old

The upper limit:
debut 25-years-old + 32 years passed: 57-year-old

Because the exhibition against Carlos was 3 years after Joe appeared in front of him, Danpei was 40 to 54-year-old at the beginning of “Ashita no Joe."

40 to 54 … It’s too wide…

Joe knew his name “Tange Danpei"

Joe said to Danpei on the first day of them.

“I’ve heard your name.

There was a boxer named ’Tange Danpei’ in old days."

Joe was 15-year-old at that time.

How old can children learn a name of a boxer?

Around 3 or 4-year-old children may be able to remember a name of a man they watch on TV.

If Joe was 3 or 4-year-old when he heard the name of the boxer Tange, the encounter of the two, the beginning of “Ashita no Joe," was about 11 or 12 years later.

Now, we need the age of Danpei at the retirement from the ring.

If Danpei retired from boxing at the age of 25, he was 36 or 37-year-old at the beginning of this story.

But in this case, Danpei was necessarily under 40 at the exhibition.

It contradicts the estimated figure mentioned above.

The lower limit at the exhibition is 43 persistently and then, the lower limit at the beginning is 40.

If Danpei continued to be a prizefighter till the age of 35, he could be 46 or 47-year-old when he met Joe.

Thus, he was 50-year-old at the exhibition match.

This is a case in which he remained in the ring until the age of 35.

The training or body care techniques were not developed in his era.

It’s hard to continue to be a boxer until over the middle of thirty.

In a word, the upper limit of the age of Danpei at the start of “Ashita no Joe" was 47.

Joe grew from 15 to 21, “Ashita no Joe" is 6 years story.

Summary of the age of Danpei Tange

At the beginning of “Ashita no Joe": 40 – 47 years old

At the exhibition match against Carlos: 43 – 50 years old

At the end of “Ashita no Joe": 46 – 53 years old

During Joe grew from a boy to an adult, Danpei hadn’t changed at all.

He doesn’t look in the forties at the beginning, but can be seen in the fifties at the end.
